Recycle

Recycling, Composting and Waste ReductionRecycle Symbol

You make our recycling program a success! UCAR/NCAR recycles and composts 68% of all discards from offices, labs and kitchens. Reduce, Re-Use and Recycle successfully with our extensive collection program.

How do I recycle....?

FreeCycle: Give and get free office supplies – FreeCycle is reusable office supply store.
Composting: Turn your leftover food into soil, not trash.

Remember - It is against UCAR policy to appropriate recyclables or any other UCAR-purchased items for personal use, or to sell them for personal benefit.

Single Stream Recycling

SINGLE STREAM RECYCLING

Composting

Turn your leftovers into soil.

Composting diverts waste from landfills and turns it into a nutrient-rich soil amendment for use in gardening and agriculture.  Staff are welcome to put compostables they generate at work in any of the labeled collection bins. We can ONLY accept compostable material generated by activities in UCAR/NCAR offices. Please note that shredded paper is compostable (not recyclable) and needs to be placed in compost bins. To learn more about household composting or collection options for your household food wasted, contact EcoCycle, Western Disposal or your local county recyling center.

Plan a Zero Waste Event

Hosting a meeting or event at UCAR/NCAR?  It's easy to make it a Zero Waste Event!

1. Plan ahead to cut waste out of your party and save your budget for the fun stuff. Check out these tips!

2. Simply and conveniently purchase low-cost compostable-ware from Events Services.  Visit your campus cafeteria to pick up compostable plates, cups, utensils and napkins, and have them directly billed to your account code.  No cash, credit card or reimbursements needed!

3. Let your guests know that your items are compostable, and direct them to place items in the compost and recycle bins. Most conference rooms on campus have compost bins in place, and you can request temporary bins for any location on campus. Just contact the Sustainability team to arrange for compost and recycling bin delivery.

Electronics

Recycle: Electronics & Computers

 Electronics

All items that require a power cord or battery power supply are designated as “electronics” for the purpose of recycling. For example: computers, monitors, printers, mobile phones, space heaters and fans.

Individuals should contact their Division Property Administrator (DPA) prior to disposing of any tagged property, as required in Policy 5-9, Property Management Policy. Once electronic items are appropriately designated for disposal, they should be collected for recycling. To request a pickup of electronics, submit a Logistics work order. Small, low value items may be placed in designated FreeCycle collection bins, from which they will be sorted and recycled.

Electronic items are not to be placed in trash or in “single stream” recycling bins. Logistics can pick up large quantities of electronics recycling from the individual or group disposing of them. For more information, contact Sustainability.

Sorry, we are unable to recycle personal electronics or other personal items for staff. Boulder County and Broomfield residents can recycle electronics and many other items at Eco-Cycle.  Check your county recycling center for more information.

Shredded Paper

Shredded paper is compostable, but NOT recyclable. For small quantities of shredded paper, place the paper in the nearest compost bin yourself. Do NOT put plastic bags containing shreds into the compost.

Compostable bags are available for shredders. To request bags, contact the Maintenance Service Desk at x1120 or maintreq@ucar.edu.  Be sure to include your name, the size bag you need (13, 30, or 42 gallon) along with the building and room number where you’d like the bags delivered.
