VACCINES:
The Flu Shot - Injection (Free to UCAR staff, retirees, their spouses/partners, and dependent children 18-26 years of age):
The regular flu vaccine contains killed influenza virus of the types selected by the U.S. Public Health Service and the Center for Biologics Evaluation & Research of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The types of virus included are those that have most recently been causing influenza. The vaccine will not give you flu because it is a killed virus vaccine. As with any vaccine, flu vaccine may not protect 100% of all susceptible individuals.
Optional Nasal Flu Spray - FluMist® (Available on request; $19/pp co-pay paid by participants:
The nasal flu spray contains weakened live influenza viruses of the types selected by the U.S. Public Health Service and the Center for Biologics Evaluation & Research of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The types of virus included are those that have most recently been causing influenza. Made from weakened live viruses, the flu spray is engineered not to cause disease. As with any vaccine, nasal flu spray may not protect 100% of all susceptible individuals. The FluMist® is available on request at UCAR on-site locations and Passport Health facilities for $19/pp co-pay paid by the participants. Payments made to Passport Health - cash, check, credit cards, and medical debit cards accepted.
RISKS AND POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS:
Influenza vaccine generally causes only mild side effects that occur at low frequency. Most commonly, the injection vaccine may cause a sore or tender arm where the injection was given, or possibly fever, chills, headache, or muscle aches. The most common reactions to the nasal flu spray are runny nose in all ages, low-grade fever (100-102F) in young children and sore throat in adults. These side effects usually last 24 to 48 hours. Most people who receive the vaccine either have no reaction or only mild reactions. There is a possibility, as with any vaccine or drug, that an allergic or other serious reaction, or even death, could occur. Also, medical events completely unrelated to the vaccine may occur coincidentally following vaccination.
